Dallas Mavericks rookie Tarik Biberovic has declared his ambition to become a reliable player for the franchise, arriving as part of a major offseason transformation. The team's recent form shows a 2W-3L record in their last five games 2026.
Biberovic, a 25-year-old forward, was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in the trade for Santi Aldama. He signed a two-year deal to bring his sharp shooting from Turkish club Fenerbahce to the NBA. "This was my dream, and I am happy that I have finally been able to achieve it," Biberovic told reporters. He added that he plans to start from scratch and fight for every minute on the court.
Biberovic's primary skill is his elite three-point shooting. He shot 41.4% from beyond the arc in the EuroLeague last season. His accuracy was even more impressive in the Turkish domestic league, where he hit 49.7% of his threes across 34 games.
That shooting touch could earn him a spot in the rotation. He will compete for minutes on a deep Mavericks roster that features several new faces. His ability to space the floor is a valuable asset in today's NBA, and it gives head coach Dusty May a specific offensive weapon.
The Mavericks underwent a complete restructuring this summer. New president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz took over. They replaced former coach Jason Kidd with Dusty May, who led Michigan to an NCAA championship.
Player movement was extensive. The draft brought Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio de Larrea. Trades netted Zaccharie Risacher, Santi Aldama, and Marcus Sasser. Biberovic's signing from Turkey completed the international addition. The current roster stands at 19 players, but it must be trimmed to 18 before the season starts, with 15 standard contracts and three two-way deals.
As training camp approaches, the Mavericks have a crowded lineup. The guard group is led by Kyrie Irving and includes newcomers Klay Thompson and Marcus Sasser. Max Christie, Sergio de Larrea, John Poulakidas, and Jett Howard provide depth.
The forwards are a mix of youth and experience. Rookie Cooper Flagg headlines the group alongside P.J. Washington, Naji Marshall, and trade acquisitions Santi Aldama and Zaccharie Risacher. Caleb Martin, Morez Johnson Jr., Tarik Biberovic, and Tobi Lawal round out the wing and forward spots. The center position is anchored by Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, with Moussa Cisse as another option.
Poulakidas, Howard, and Lawal are on two-way contracts. The team currently has 16 players on standard deals, meaning one player must be moved or released.
The immediate focus is on training camp and finalizing the roster. Integrating so many new players, including Biberovic, will be a primary task for Coach May. The team's recent results, like the 139-120 loss to San Antonio on April 11, show there is work to do defensively.
Biberovic's transition from European star to NBA contributor will be a storyline to watch. His shooting can help immediately, but earning consistent minutes in a competitive Western Conference is the real challenge. The Mavericks hope their overhaul, combining established stars with promising rookies like Biberovic, leads to a climb up the standings.
